The BMW X3’s a bit Bangle-quirky, and the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz GLK looks like a blocky mini-truck. So clean, simple, and sporty is the logical route for Audi’s entry in the compact premium SUV segment, the all-new Q5. The new Q5 combines Audi’s trademark single frame grille with clean surfaces. Subtle fender flares hint at the A5 from some angles, and the roofline is one of the lowest in the segment.

The Q5 is built off the same architecture as the new A4 sedans and wagons and the A5 coupes. That means longitudinal engines, and a Quattro drive system with 60 percent of the torque directed to the rear wheels in normal driving.

The longitudinal engines bit is important because that means the Q5 can run anything from an inline-four to a V-8 under the hood, like the A4/A5. For the U.S., however, the Q5 will initially be available only with Audi’s 3.2-liter direct-injection V-6, driving through a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. With 265 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, the FSI V-6 provides grunt enough to propel the Q5 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

Aimed squarely at BMW X3, Benz GLK, Infiniti Ex35, Land Rover LR2, Lexus RX 350, and the Volvo XC60, the Q5 rolls on the longest wheelbase in the segment — 110.6 inches. That’s a full half-inch longer than the X3 and almost six inches longer than the LR2. It’s strictly a two-row vehicle, but the second row folds flat to provide just over 55 cu ft of load space.

The Q5 features extensive use of high-strength steel in the body structure. The hood and tailgate are made from aluminum to reduce weight, and aluminum is used extensively in the suspension. The compact trapezoidal-link rear-suspension layout allows a low floor in the rear cargo area. The Q5 will come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, but wheels up to 20-inch diameter will be available as options.

Though basically a soft-roader, Audi claims the Q5 is reasonably adept off the tarmac, capable of climbing 31-degree slopes, with a break-over angle of 17.5 degrees. Ground clearance is almost 7.9 inches, and Audi says the Q5 can handle water up to 19.7 inches deep.

The Q5 will be available with the usual array of Audi features, including the latest-generation three version of the MMI computer interface, power tailgate, keyless entry, Bluetooth hands-free phone, a Bang & Olufsen 505-watt 14-speaker sound system, and even a heated and cooled cupholder.

Perhaps the most innovative feature, however, is on the roof. The Q5’s roof rack features sensors that detect when it is being used to carry a load. The sensors feed the information into the electronic stability control system, which then automatically adjusts its operating parameters — basically lowering the dynamic threshold at which it begins to intervene — to compensate for the upward shift in the vehicle’s center of gravity.

The Audi Q5 will go on sale here in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2009, with pricing close to BMW’s X3 and other rivals.

Audi AG has created a microsite for its long-awaited Audi Q5 Release date for their new compact crossover. The Audi Q5 release is slated for April 19 on the eve of the 2008 Beijing Auto Show. The Audi Q5 release will be launched via Audi TV at 6:00 AM Beijing time. As the days tick away and the world awaits the official Audi Q5 release, one has to wonder why Beijing? The Audi Q5 release could have happened at the Detroit International Auto Show, where the automobile world comes to tell the world what they are offering. The Audi Q5 Release could have happened at the New York International Auto Show, the media capital of the world. The Audi Q5 release could have happened at the Geneva International Auto Show, Europe’s answer to Detroit. I ask again, why is the Audi Q5 Release happening in Beijing? Executives from Audi are hoping that the Audi Q5 will not only match, but exceed X3 sales in the United States, the world’s largest automobile market.  Audi has not been shy about telling the world that they want to be the world’s number-one selling luxury brand.   

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG believes that introduction of the Audi Q5 will take Audi a big step closer to reaching vehicle sales of 1.4 million per year, a target that they hope to reach by 2015 if not sooner. 

With the addition of the Audi Q5, Audi seems to have the vehicles in place and it is just a matter of time before BMW, Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Infiniti, Jaguar and Acura are Audi’s rear view mirror.

This leaked from unnamed sources from Playboy. The October centerfold spread will be shot at the mansion using the new Audi Q5 SUV as the backdrop for the spread. When asked about the Playboy photo spread, Audi officials refused comment. This is a departure from the very conservative German company. On the other hand, Playboy is the perfect vehicle in which to show how sporty and sexy the new Q5 is. Audi Q5 Pricing There still is no word on the new Audi Q5 pricing as the auto maker prepares to launch the new small SUV in October.  Official Audi Q5 pricing and Audi Q5 news has been scarce and Audi officials have kept it that way.   Common sense says the Audi Q5 pricing will be somewhere between the BMW X3 and the Acura RDX.  The X3 has a starting MSRP of $38,000 while the Acura has a range of $32,000 to $38,000.  We also took a look at the Lexus RX 350 AWD, which starts at $39,665 with the price increasing depending on the different option packages.  Speculation on the Audi Q5 pricing has the vehicle in the mid $30,000 to $40,000 dollar range.  Audi Q5 Pricing will depend on the specifications for the power plant.  The Audi Q5 will feature three possible engines: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with some 200 horsepower; a 3.2-liter V-6 with around 260; and possibly a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 making 233 horsepower.   If they do decide to bring the diesel to market, Audi Q5 specifications call for a “Bluetec” emissions-cleanup system that will permit Audi to sell the Q5 in all 50 states. The Audi Q5 should mirror the company’s A4 line in standard and optional features.  Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG believes that introduction of the Audi Q5 will take Audi a big step closer to reaching vehicle sales of 1.4 million per year, a target that thay hope to reach by 2015.

 Lightning fast, virtually seamless Audi S tronic gear changes will soon be within the grasp of drivers of the all-new A4 Saloon, the Q5 SUV and many more Audi models as a new version of the much loved dual-clutch transmission brings compatibility with longitudinal or ‘north-south’ engine installations.

Originally developed to work with transversely mounted units, and so initially restricted to the TT and the A3, the latest generation of S tronic can now extend its reach upwards to the A4, A5, Q5 and many other Audi models whose engines are mounted ‘lengthways’.

In its latest form the famously quick and slick gearbox, developed exclusively by Audi, offers the existing transmission’s familiar Drive, Sport and ‘Manual’ modes, the latter upgrading from six to seven fixed ratios, and boasts a higher torque threshold of 550Nm. This impressive capacity means that it is theoretically compatible with a wide spectrum of sports models, including the majority of the V8 and V10-powered performance flagships and the high performance TDI models.

The formidable outputs produced by these cars will be handled by two multi-plate clutches – one controlling the odd gears 1, 3, 5 and 7 and the other the even 2, 4, 6 and reverse. Both transmission elements are continuously active, but only one is powered by the engine at any one time. This means that when the driver accelerates in third gear, for example, fourth is already pre-engaged by the second transmission element. The switching process takes place in mere hundredths of a second as the clutch shifts – while one is opening, the other closes, so changes are remarkably swift and the power flow is never interrupted.

The new seven-speed S tronic has also been designed to work in conjunction with the latest generation quattro four-wheel-drive system with asymmetric-dynamic distribution, so in normal conditions 40 per cent of the power is channelled from the drive shaft to the front axle differential and 60 per cent to the rear, resulting in optimum handling poise.

Twenty three years ago Audi fielded its first dual-clutch transmission in the 476PS Sport quattro S1 rally car piloted by Walter Rohrl and Christian Geistdorfer, and since its transfer to the road in 2003 as the Direct Shift Gearbox or DSG over 188,000 examples have been installed worldwide. The latest version, with its dramatically greater scope for application across the Audi range, will make its debut in UK-bound Audi models in late 2008.
